Afton Oaks Homes
On the Galleria side of the 610 Loop, you're likely to cross paths with any number of busy shoppers scurrying through the streets and parking lots with their shopping bags in tow, no matter what time of the day. Until the point each night when the mall closes, it's as busy as any area of Houston. Horns are honking, lights are flashing and commerce is everywhere. Just on the other side of the freeway; however, on the inside of the loop lies the calm and refined neighborhood known as Afton Oaks.
Afton Oaks Subdivision
Afton Oaks is a subdivision composed of more than 400 primarily 1950s ranch-style homes (with a sprinkling of new construction thrown in there for good measure), Afton Oaks is bounded on the north by Westheimer, on the south by the Southwest Freeway, on the west by Loop 610 and on the east by Mid Lane. The fact that it's close to downtown, as well as its virtually adjacent proximity to uptown and the Galleria area, has made it a destination of choice for two-income families wanting to be near both work and the Inner Loop's numerous entertainment venues.
Because of its active civic club, Afton Oaks was selected as part of a "Neighborhoods to Standard" four-year renovation program. The program set out to install new streets and curbs and storm sewers in Afton Oaks as needed, and also worked to lobby against a proposed METRORail route on Richmond a number of years ago.
Afton Oaks Location
Afton Oaks is located south of memorial park, west of River Oaks, east of the Galleria / 610, and north of Highway 59.
Afton Oaks Housing
Some of Afton Oaks' original ranch-style homes are being replaced with much larger single-family homes, patio homes and town homes. The area is near River Oaks and includes Post Oak Park, a high-density commercial and residential development close to the 610 loop as well as nearby Highland Village--one of Houston's most popular shopping areas.
The average Afton Oaks home offers about 2,200 square feet, three bedrooms and two or two and one-half baths on a 8,000+ square foot lot. Many were built originally with the timeless features home buyers look for even now such as hardwood floors, built-ins and a traditional take on architecture. Prices range from the $200,000s for properties near major thoroughfares, to over $600,000 for updated and new construction on interior lots.
